5 Ways To Get Your Kids To Read More

This is the age-old dilemma: getting your kids to read anything at all! It can be difficult when you have no idea how to do it, let alone where to start. Here are some ways that can help you spark that interest in your kids:

1. Pick books that have been turned into movies

Turning book reading into a fun activity could be a great way to get your kids to read more. There are tons of classics out there that have been turned into movies such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Charlotte’s Web. You can start by reading the book with them, and then organizing a movie night to watch the movie adaptation together. Perhaps make a game out of it by asking them to point out the differences between the book and the movie. This might get young reluctant readers the motivation to read more.

2. Bring a book with you when you’re out

Imagine you’re stuck in traffic with your kids, or in the waiting room at the dentist, and they’re tired and complaining. It’s not the best image, but it happens! Try carrying a couple of books with you to pull out during these times as a way to get your kids to use the time productively. It’s a great way to pass the time and your kids might get into it!

3. Don’t force it

If you start nagging at your children to read, their natural inclination will be to associate reading with an obligation. Don’t force it as it might turn them off from the idea altogether. Instead, suggest it every once in a while or place books around the house for them to see. It may just be the little push they’ll need to pick up the book and read.

4. Read more yourself

Of course, you can’t get somebody else to read more when you yourself don’t read either! If your kids see you reading, chances are they’ll pick up that habit. We forget that our kids take what we do seriously, so read more in common spaces of your home. Don’t stop there though, even talking about the books you’re reading can engage them if they see that it brings you pleasure.

5. The gift of books

Books are great gifts for kids, and the family’s involvement in giving books is a good way to surround them with literature. It’s also the ultimate fuel for their imagination, and they’ll appreciate you for it in the long run. You can even give them a kindle, for example, with various eBooks in their very own online library for more convenience. They might even be more excited about it! Feel free to browse through our own online library, www.novelso.com, for plenty of options for the whole family!
