With summer now a distant memory, thoughts turn to the fall and all the changes that it brings – and we’re not just talking about leaves changing colours here.
This is the time of year when kids start returning to school, but for many it can also be the start of their school journey and it’s natural that the first day of school will come with a mix of nervousness and excitement.
Although they are handing their children over to be educated by teachers, parents can still play a huge role in their child’s school life and it is important, especially over the first few weeks and months of their school lives, that you can be a positive influence on them.
Here are a few tips to help parents help their kids on those early days at school.
Don’t get stressed.
Yes, you may have checklist from the school of everything you’ll need for your little one’s new start, but it’s important that you show your child that you are calm and relaxed as any anxiety will rub off on them at a time they are probably already feeling a bit nervous.
Let them get involved
Take them shopping for school supplies such as stationery, bags and lunchboxes. Let them choose which ones they like as this gives them a great sense of responsibility and achievement.
Take an interest but don’t force it
You may find that when you ask your child about what they have been doing in school in the first few weeks, you will get very little out of them. This is normal, they are probably tired and have already been processing a lot of new things by the time they get home. You should always take an interest in your child’s school life, but you will need to be patient in the early days as they find their bearings.
